Jochen Schmidt began an apprenticeship with his father Hans Karl Schmidt in Dresden.
From 1990 to 1991, he worked in Willem Bouman's Violinmaker Workshop in Den Haag, Netherlands.
He qualified as a master craftsman in Nuremberg in 1993.
He opened his first independent workshop in Dresden in 1997.
Jochen Schmidt has been awarded several medals and prices in national and international bowmaking competitions.
