Biography
Jonathan Magerl is a violin maker based in Berlin, Germany. He specializes in the construction of new stringed instruments, mainly violins and violas.
After his training at the Mittenwald School of Violin Making, he worked for two years at the workshop of Andreas Hampel and Susanne Riebesehl in Hamburg, Germany. Then, Jonathan moved to Berlin, to refine his skills as a maker, working as the assistent of Ragnar Hayn for five years. This experience gave Jonathan a clear direction for his own career path: The exclusive focus on new instrument making.
In 2025, Jonathan set up his own business in Berlin. Here he makes instruments, inspired by the 18th century Italian masters. His instruments are being played in several well-renowned European orchestras, e.g. the Vienna Philharmonic. In
January of 2026, a viola of his was awarded two prices at the International Viola Making Competition in Paris: the third price (overall) as well as the „coup de coeur“ special price for the favorite instrument of the musicians of the Philharmonie de Paris.
